Pulmonary embolism
Vienna prediction model
The Vienna prediction model (Eichinger 2010) estimates recurrence after a first unprovoked VTE from sex (men HR 1.90), location (proximal DVT HR 2.08 and PE HR 2.60 vs distal DVT) and D-dimer 3 weeks after stopping anticoagulation (HR 1.27 per doubling). This tool combines the published hazard ratios into a relative risk and links to the nomogram for absolute risk. Prospective validation in 2023 confirmed low recurrence in patients with a predicted 1-year risk ≤ 5.5%.
